EAGLE BITTER UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE NEWSLETTER NO. 201
JULY 2006

Eagle Bitter extend sponsorship

The United Counties League are pleased to announce a new three year sponsorship with Eagle Bitter brewer Charles Wells Limited of Bedford.

It means the league will be called ‘The Eagle Bitter United Counties Football League’ until the end of the 2008-09 season.

Peter Gowans, Regional Sales Manager of Charles Wells Limited, said:

“We are delighted ro have secured the sponsorship of the UCL for another three seasons and in doing so become the longest running sponsor in the league’s history. Eagle Bitter will have been associated with the league for nine years”.
“Our pub estate is positioned within the five counties covered by the United Counties League and gives Charles Wells the opportunity to show our support for the region whilst supporting other marketing initiatives to drive even more awareness of our brands”.

“It’s a long term commitment and whilst the details are confidential the new deal represents an increased investment of over 35%, however we see the exposure of the UCL and its member clubs growing as non league football is restructured by the Football Association”.

John Weeks, Chairman of the UCL, thanked Charles Wells for their continued support. Commenting on the agreement he said:

“This is the most lucrative sponsorship deal in the league’s history and reflects the growing interest in the exposure the non league game offers”. He continued: “Research shows that during the season our league alone appears in newspapers and publications with a combined circulation approaching one million every week. That’s incredible exposure for our sponsors’ name across the region and nationally, whilst our results service on the net had over 600,000 visits last season, an almost 40% increase over the season before”.

“This kind of exposure offers considerable benefits for companies to work with the UCL and anyone interested should contact the league’s commercial agent, Sports Marketing Services, who worked with Charles Wells to create the new sponsorship agreement, on 01604-660697”.

Ridgway takes charge at Kiln Park

Promotion winning Wellingborough manager Colin Ridgway was quick to secure a return to UCL football after his departure from the Doughboys. He has been named as the new manager of Premier Division Raunds replacing the Wellingborough bound Nick Ashby at the Shopmates helm.

Former manager Kelly Meagan returns to Raunds for a second spell as assistant, with another returnee Wayne Simmonds coach, while former Blackstones coach Andy Mills has been appointed reserve manager at Kiln Park.

Stotfold hand Clark the reins

Stotfold have handed Glen Clark the managerial reins in succession to Jim Benton who left the Eagles at the end of last season.

Clark was formerly in charge at Spartan South Midlands League side Arlesey Athletic, taking them to the top of their division before leaving Athletic midway through last term.

Former Metropolitan Police player and UEFA B qualified coach Ian Croft will assist Clark at Roker, while a switch in responsibilities with the reserves will see last season’s manager John Philbin and assistant Terry Kitchener swap roles.

Ross in S&L caretaker charge

Paul Ross has been handed the caretaker reins at Stewarts & Lloyds after Rob Clark decided to step down from the helm at Occupation Road.

Ross, who joined S&L from Strip Mills, has given the club excellent service over five years as reserve manager, with a fair bit of success thrown in. The S&L second string won the Reserve Knockout Cup in 2003 and reached the semi-finals of the Northants Junior Cup in each of the last three seasons.

Outgoing boss Clark will continue to oversee training at Occupation Road.

Goode joins Rangers staff

Experienced defender Michael Goode has returned to Deeping as part of Tuncay Kotkmaz’s new look management team. Goode gave Rangers good service as a player before moving to Yaxley two years ago. In his earlier spell at Outgang Road he doubled up as youth team manager and was in charge of the under 18s when they reached the FA Youth Cup proper.

Phil Jarman steps up to reserve team boss following Mac Paget’s resignation with youth team manager Dave Vaughan the new assistant.

Leech links up with Ar Tarn

Former Desborough full back Graham Leech has returned to the Waterworks Field as assistant to manager Steve Noble. He replaces Kevin Byrne who stepped down at the end of last season.

Leech assisted Rob Clark at Stewarts & Lloyds last term and before that he managed the now defunct Corby Cottingham..

Verity in Bugbrooke return

Former Ford Sports assistant manager Nick Verity has taken the managerial reins at Bugbrooke for a second time. His appointment follows the Badgers’ parting of the ways with Danny Mackintosh who had been at the Birds Close helm for three years after becoming the league’s youngest manager at the age of 22.

Verity played for Bugbrooke before a spell as reserve team boss. He then managed the Badgers from 1993 to 1997 before embarking on a six year spell in charge at Sileby Rangers.

Assisting Verity is another ex-Bugbrooke player Peter Robinson, who has spent the last two season as Gary Petts’ assistant at Sileby.

Daventry Go Mobile!

Mobile phone company Go Mobile have been unveiled as the new financial backers of Division One survivors Daventry Town. Go Mobile is the country’s fourth largest independent mobile phone company with 57 outlets nationally.

Former co-manager Steve Kirchin has left Town to join Wellingborough as reserve boss with goalkeeper Warren Courtney taking on a player coach role at Elderstubbs.

Daventry hope to have their floodlights operational again in September while the first two portakabins earmarked as temporary dressing rooms are now on site.

Ex-Premiership defender joins Higham backroom staff

Former Sheffield Wednesday defender Simon Stewart will assist Higham manager Jim Le Masurier in the season ahead. Stewart also had spells with Fulham and Shrewsbury in the Football League and was a back to back FA Trophy winner with Woking in the last two finals played at Wembley.

Stewart has managerial experience with Spalding United, spending half a season in charge at the Halley Stewart Field in the Tulips’ relegation season from the Southern League 2002-03.

Irchester add to management team

Irchester have added two new faces to their backroom staff. 27 year old sports coach and fitness trainer Stefan Cappel has linked up with the Romans as fitness coach. He has a sports science degree from the University of North London and has recently been working for Nike on their ‘Run London’ campaign.

Youth team product Luke Tyler will be involved in the management of the Under 18 side this season. He will assist youth team manager Mark Wheeler in the campaign ahead.

Sileby revamp backroom staff

Sileby Rangers will have a new look management team for the new season with only first team manager Gary Petts remaining from last season. Petts will be assisted by Danny Mackintosh who has spent the last three seasons as manager of Division One rivals Bugbrooke.

The second string will be under new management with John Spencer and assistant Lee Herbert arriving from Town League club Thorplands to take the second string reins.

Young takes charge at Star

Peterborough Northern Star have appointed DarrenYoung as their new manager. He has spent the last four seasons as youth team manager at Corby Town having started his coaching career at Castle Rise. During his time with the Steelmen he led them to the first ever clean sweep of all three Northants Senior Youth League trophies in the 2003-04 season.

Young has also managed AFC Corby Town to promotion in the Northants Combination. He will be assisted by Jim McBurnie.

Harrowby join Grantham League

Harrowby ended a 16 year spell in membership of the league at the end of May, resigning for financial reasons. It was a sad end in senior football for the Arrows who only three years before finished third in the Premier Division.

Harrowby will play in the grassroots Grantham League in the 2006-07 season instead of taking up a Division One place following their relegation from the top flight.

Stotfold and Whitworths win programme awards

The results of the Soccer Club Swap Shop’s annual programme surveys have recently been announced.

Sixteen Premier Division clubs submitted entries with Stotfold topping the poll followed by Cogenhoe in second place and Boston Town in third.

Whitworths were adjudged the best of the nine entries from Division One with Huntingdon second.
