NEWSLETTER NO. 194 NOVEMBER 2005 PAGE 1
League magazine launched
The first issue of the new ‘UCL Mag’ was launched at the start of November. League commercial agent Kim Barnard has sponsored the first edition through his Sports Marketing Service business.
Various leagues have produced their own publications in the past, but the UCL Mag is innovative in that it is a 16 page A4 full colour publication.
The first issue includes features on Blisworth, Cogenhoe United, Northampton Spencer and Sileby Rangers, developments in the non-league pyramid, media coverage, referee if the year Chris Knowles, and ‘young guns’ around the league. There are also news items, competitions and around 50 photographs.
The plan is for the magazine to come out bi-monthly this season and monthly next.
The recommended retail price for the magazine is £1, and all money raised will go to the selling club.
Desborough part company with Munton
Desborough have parted company with summer managerial appointment John Munton. The former Corby Town and Stewarts & Lloyds goalkeeper was handed the Waterworks Field reins at the end of last season after a spell as assistant to Simon Rielly, but Ar Tarn’s form has been way below expectations this season and poor results led to the exit of the manager.
Former chief Rielly has returned to the helm on a temporary basis while the club advertise for Munton’s successor.
President Paul Linnett and youth team manager Wayne Marlow have also left the Waterworks Field club in the fallout out from the managerial change.
Green joins Arrows
Harrowby United have appointed widely travelled manager Geoff Green as co-boss alongside Jason Harrison. Green replaces former Bourne assistant manager Steve Joseph as Harrison’s managerial partner at Harrowby Fields.
The new co-manager resigned as Burton Park Wanderers manager early in the current campaign and previously held the reins at Long Buckby. He has also managed Grantham Rangers and Loughborough and the second strings of Grantham Town and Stamford.
A tough task faces the managerial partners as they bid to turn round the season with minimal resources as the club channel funds into repayment of a brewery loan and safety work on the stand at Harrowby Fields.
Left sided player Lee Booker has arrived from Blackstones while ex-Grantham Town midfielder Steve Young has rejoined the Arrows.
Goal ace back with Royals
Last season’s Premier Division top scorer Brett Donnelly has rejoined title chasing Potton United after a brief spell with Arlesey in the Southern League. Donnelly scored 54 goals in all competitions last season and 112 in three years with the Royals after being signed by former manager Dick Newman.
The returning striker now teams up with his father Ian, who was appointed Potton manager following Newman’s summer exit.
MP to open Holbeach stand
Holbeach will officially open their new stand on Sunday 11th December, Holbeach Christmas Market day. Local MP John Hayes will be the man entrusted with cutting the ribbons and unveiling the new facility. A commemorative match will take place at Carters Park in the new year.
On the field Holbeach have lost the services of exciting young striker Tom Gosling, and with Omar Joof sidelined with an ankle injury, manager Shaun Keeble has been forced to resume his playing career on a regular basis.
New faces aplenty for Cogenhoe
A long injury list has forced Cogenhoe manager Adam Sandy into some major transfer market activity in recent weeks. Ex-Northampton Town defender Jason Burnham has arrived from Racing Warwick, another ex-Cobbler Neil Champelovier has switched from league rivals Woodford while other additions to the Compton Park playing strength are Dan Burke and Jamie Wright, both from Southern League Rothwell Town, and Raunds wide man Ryan Nash.
The new look line up has struggled to gel and recent results have been poor with the champions sliding down the league and bowing out of the FA Vase and Northants Senior Cup.
Cogenhoe’s injury list is beginning to ease with Richard Bunting, Brian Page and Stuart Smeathers all close to comebacks.
The club has formed a sub committee to investigate facility improvements necessary to progress up the non league pyramid.
St Ives the ‘Wigan’ of the UCL
Premier Division newcomers St Ives have emerged as the ‘Wigan’ of the Eagle Bitter UCL, after a six match winning run which has lifted them to the top four.
The club’s return to Westwood Road after their pitch problems took place on 22nd October and the occasion was celebrated in style with a 4-0 win over Newport Pagnell. Further home fixtures have seen victories over Wootton and Ford Sports.
Defender Steve Poore has returned following injury but front runner Chris Ewles faces three months on the sidelines with a broken ankle.
Boston’s Matson out for the season
Boston’s leading goalscorer last season Danny Matson has been ruled out for the remainder of the current campaign following a cruciate ligament operation. There is better news of the Poachers’ other long term casualty Ross Don-Duncan who has recently returned to action after missing the first three months of the season.
Boston have added former Cardiff City junior Paul Buttery to their squad. He is the RAF goalkeeper and has also played UCL football for Harrowby previously.
New faces for Fords
Ford Sports manager Shane Geary has been busy in the transfer market, plugging gaps in his squad. Ex-Banbury goalkeeper Marcus Townsend has joined Fords for a second time while midfield recruits are Tyrone Kent, a former Fords title winner most recently with Long Buckby, and Matt Ablett from Northampton Spencer.
Ian Giles and Ian Pearce have both returned to action following spells on the injured list, adding further competition for places in the Fords squad. Manager Geary has announced plans to call time on his playing days at the end of the season.
Raunds injury list easing
Raunds have been hit by a series of injuries to key players this season but the queue for the treatment table is gradually shortening at Kiln Park. Striker Matt Curtis is nearing full fitness after a hamstring problem, while midfielder Ben Armstrong is back in light training after a knee injury. Wide man Carl Tallents is making slow progress after dislocating his shoulder for the second time this season.
Latest addition to the Kiln Park squad is midfield Rashid Koriya from Cogenhoe.
Mitchell comeback lasts a minute
Bourne Town manager Mark Mitchell has regularly named himself as a substitute for the Wakes this season, but his first actual appearance on the field on 5th November went horribly wrong. The Wakes boss joined the action against St Ives with his side seeking to peg back their visitors, but within a minute of his introduction Mitchell had to go off after twisting his ankle with no one near him. Treatment subsequently revealed the Bourne boss had broken the ankle, so he’ll be sticking to directing operations from the touchline in future.
Former Wakes wide man James Baxter has rejoined the club from Harrowby.
Deeping end poor run
Deeping ended a run of nine matches without a win by beating Long Buckby at Station Road on 12th November, their previous success came in the Outgang Road clash with Buckby.
Injuries have bitten deep into Vince Adams’s squad with the match at Potton on 5th November seeing Matt Porter, Chris Emmerson and top scorer Mark Lovelace all joining the casualty list. A shortage of front runners has prompted the Deeping boss to bring back former player Steve Phillips from Peterborough Northern Star.
Ling flies solo at Huntingdon
After the departure of long serving manager Andy Rossi at the end of last season, Huntingdon are now working under their third manager since. Gary Ling, a former Huntingdon United goalkeeper and ex-Town reserve assistant manager, has been handed the reins following the departure of Dave Blackwell in early November. Blackwell had only taken over during the close season, having initially switched from Godmanchester to run the reserves. He was then promoted to first team boss when Paul Telling, who initially replaced Rossi in the hot seat, took up employment in Germany. New chief Ling has been working in the Town management team this season as Blackwell’s right hand man.
The new Huntingdon manager halted the club’s slide down the Division One table with a 1-1 draw at Bugbrooke on 5th November in his first game in charge.
New additions to the Huntingdon squad are Mark Peacock from Godmanchester, and former manager Rossi who has returned from Somersham as a player.
Doughboys strengthen strikeforce
Wellingborough Town 2004 have moved into the transfer market to strengthen their attack for a title push. James Daldy, second highest scorer in Division One last term, has switched from neighbours Whitworths after a decade and 137 UCL goals in Flourmen’s colours, while wide man Jon Mitchell has become the latest former Rothwell Town man to join the Doughboys.
Both new recruits were on target against Daventry on 12th November with Daldy’s 13 second opener a candidate for the league’s fastest goal of the season.
The Doughboys’ crowds continue to astound with the first five home games drawing an average of 364, with a 475 derby attendance against Higham the best so far. Club officials believe that only FC United of Manchester are attracting better crowds to watch step 6 football nationwide.
Flourmen add to squad
Whitworths manager Joe Smyth has continued to add to his squad as the Division One title race hots up. The latest recruits at London Road are Irchester full back Greg Arnold and Thrapston’s leading goalscorer last season, James Blake.
James Westley was recently the subject of a presentation from league chairman John Weeks to mark his achievement of 300 career goals in UCL football. The player actually reached the milestone while playing for Higham last season but eight goals in seven matches since joining Whitworths suggests his hunger for goals is still there.
Star strengthen squad
Peterborough Northern Star have strengthened their squad in recent weeks. Goalkeeper Simon Ward has arrived from Premier Division Boston Town, while Carmine and Carl Melillo have been recruited from Hotpoint. Widely travelled striker Laurence Clark is also back in action after a lengthy injury lay off which has restricted his appearances since switching from Blackstones last season.
Five book Knockout Cup quarter final places
Six of the last eight in the Knockout Cup are now known after the competition continued apace this month. Holders Potton are out though after Woodford avenged last May’s final reverse with a 1-0 Byfield Road win, Russ Dunkley the marksman for the Reds. Yaxley progressed with a 4-2 success at Stotfold, the league’s top scorer Mark Paul on target twice for the Cuckoos, while two extra time goals from Darren Bogan gave struggling Desborough a 3-1 home win over Stewarts & Lloyds.
Defender Nicky Hurst scored twice as St Neots beat hosts Boston Town 3-2 to avenge their defeat in the 2004 final. Only Division One side definitely through to the last eight is Peterborough Northern Star who had Ian Fovargue and Darren Paling on target in a 2-1 win over higher grade Newport Pagnell.
The Preliminary Round replay between Blackstones and Rothwell Corinthians saw the home side run out 5-3 winners after extra time, with Matty Doyle scoring twice for the winners and John Sturgess twice for the losers.
Buckingham have been removed from the competition for fielding a player under Berks & Bucks FA suspension, Abdul Abdi, in their First Round win over Ford Sports, who now travel to Sleaford.
Flourmen and Shopmates in the semis
Reserve Knockout Cup action in the last month has seen Whitworths and Raunds reach the last four. The Flourmen were first into the semis with a single goal success at Holbeach, Scott Atkinson the matchwinner. The Shopmates looked on their way out when Glen Thompson and Craig Sampson opened up a two goal lead for Northampton Spencer at Kiln Psrk, but Lee Dorrington and Matt Woods hauled Raunds on terms and they won the penalty shootout 4-1.
Ford Sports went nap at Huntingdon in a 2nd Round tie, but it was to no avail for the Motormen as their side included Jamie Jollands, who had already played for Daventry in the competition. Huntingdon were awarded the tie.
Five in Vase Second Round
Exempt pair Desborough and Potton join our three survivors from a disappointing First Round of FA Vase action which saw most clubs fail to make the most of home advantage.
Yaxley produced another eye catching result though, demolishing Southend Manor 8-1 in the second biggest win of the round. A Mark Paul hat trick, Richard Challinor double and one apiece from Chris Gospel, James Picillo and a visiting defender made up the tally. Wootton went through 2-1 against Royston with a Darek Jozwiak spot kick and Steve Gentle strike securing victory while Ford Sports surprised Sutton Town 2-1 with Mark Drake and Chris Evans on the scoresheet.
Sendings off contributed to three sides’ exits. Woodford had Lewis Travers sent off for a second caution in a 4-3 reverse against Broxbourne while Jamie Wright’s early dismissal gave Cogenhoe a mountain to climb against fancied AFC Hornchurch who won by a solitary goal at Compton Park. The dismissal of Deeping goalkeeper Danny Bircham against Buxton made less of a difference as the Northern Counties East League high fliers already had a goal lead and a penalty en route to an eventual 4-0 success.
It was also the end of the line for Holbeach who went down 2-0 to FA Cup heroes Leamington in front of one of the day’s top crowds, Newport Pagnell who lost 1-0 to Romford in front of a 200 plus attendance, and our only travellers Raunds who became Gorleston’s second UCL scalp of the season.

Watson and Smyth the October top bosses
October Manager of the Month awards were won by Jimmy Watson of Yaxley in the Premier Division and Joe Smyth of Whitworths in Division One.
Watson’s men collected eleven points from five unbeaten Premier Division matches, made Knockout Cup progress and won through two ties in the FA Vase in some style.
Smyth’s first managerial award came at the end of a month which saw Whitworths pick up thirteen points from five Division One games.
Byrne the top marksman
Potton’s eve of season signing from Stotfold Wes Byrne won the October Goalscorer of the Month award after crashing in ten goals during the month’s domestic matches. He hit a hat trick in the Knockout Cup demolition of Burton Park, scored twice against Boston and Newport Pagnell and once against Ford Sports, Woodford and Bourne. Even blanks in the Royals’ last two games of the month couldn’t be exploited by the chasing pack!
Goalkeeper Bannie makes history
St Ives custodian Aaron Bannie has made history by becoming the first player to win the Hereward Sports sponsored Goalkeeper of the Month award twice. Bannie was the inaugural winner back in January while playing for the then Eye United, and followed up with a second success in October.
Bannie was pushed hard for the award by Wootton’s Matt Jones – both conceded three goals in four matches. Bannie edged it by two clean sheets to one during the month.
