EAGLE BITTER UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE
NEWSLETTER NO. 190 AUGUST 2005
Cogenhoe snap up Berry
Former Football League star Steve Berry has joined Premier Division champions Cogenhoe as a player. At 42 years of age he will be one of the league’s elder statesmen but can draw on the experience of 284 matches at the top level in a career which took in spells with Portsmouth, Sunderland, Newport, Swindon and Northampton. Berry also played in Hong Kong for Instant Dict and helped Stevenage to win the Conference. He also played for Kettering, Rushden & Diamonds and Bedford Town on the non league circuit.
Other additions to the title winning team are ON Chenecks teenagers Jon Burdett and Dan Clarke, while Jim Le Masurier from Rothwell Town will add competition for striking places.
Veteran wingman Roy Anderson has retired after a lengthy playing career in UCL football, most of which was spent at Compton Park.
New Potton boss faces major rebuild
Incoming Potton United chief Ian Donnelly faces a major rebuilding job following the break up of last season’s multi trophy winning side. Premier Division top scorer Brett Donnelly will not be playing for his father in the months ahead, having stepped up to Southern League football with Arlesey while a number of players have followed Steve Kuhne to St Neots. Also leaving The Hollow is Stuart Lochhead who has joined Hitchin in the Southern League while midfield dynamo Gary Jackson has returned to his former club Biggleswade United.
One of the first recruits in the new look Royals squad is Stotfold defender Ian Morrison, while former Roker team mates, midfielder Adam Pitcairn and striker Wes Byrne, have also switched to Potton for the new campaign. Back four man Shane Willett has arrived from Biggleswade United and Colin Shambrook has returned to The Hollow after playing for St Ippolyts in north Hertfordshire football last term. Attacking captures are ex Barton Rovers man Keith Coughlin and John Coley from Boreham Wood, while Hitchin youngster Kevin Evans should strengthen the Potton midfield.
Former co-manager Roy Bloxham has now decided to remain with the club on the coaching staff which has been supplemented by the arrival of UEFA B licence coach Peter Hayes, a one time Langford manager.
Holbeach go for stability
A quiet close season at Carters Park has seen Holbeach retain the services of most of the squad which finished in third place last season. Wide man David Cobb has linked up with his former Wisbech boss Ian Benjamin at Soham, but otherwise most of last year’s key men are still in the frame.
New faces in the Tigers squad are widely travelled defender Jason Callaby from Wyberton, another back four man Martyn Cundy from Wisbech and young strike prospect Jake Grogan from Spalding. Perhaps the most exciting capture is Jamie Graham, son of assistant manager Milton. He missed most of last season through injury, playing a few games for Peterborough Sports, but has an impressive track record in previous spells in UCL football with Blackstones and Boston Town.
Work has been continuing on the Tigers’ new stand, although plans to open it on 29 July when Boston United visited for the Gerald Starling Memorial Cup came to naught as work was not completed in time. The Pilgrims ran out 3-0 winners with Simon Rusk, ex-Premiership star Julian Joachim and Stuart Talbot on the scoresheet. Holbeach’s reserve keeper Adam Kirk enjoyed a moment to remember with a penalty save from United’s star summer capture Noel Whelan.
Little change for Yaxley
Yaxley have been one of the most settled of clubs during the close season. All of last season’s first choice players have returned for the new season, while manager Jimmy Watson has added to his range of defensive options by recruiting former Blackstones man Matthew Hall and Eye skipper Phil Anderson. Also joining Yaxley is youngster Scott Bogusz from Cambridge City.
Defender Chris Lenton will miss the start of the season while awaiting a cartilage operation.
The Cuckoos’ plans to start development work on the Leading Drive ground have hit a snag while the club attempt to resolve a dispute with one of their neighbours.
All change for Arrows
Harrowby will be one of the league’s most changed clubs in the months ahead. New player-manager Jason Harrison, at 29 the top flight’s youngest boss, looks likely to work alone following the departure of former reserve boss John Sutton from the management team. One time Harrowby manager Nicky Andersen accepted the post as Harrison’s assistant but had a subsequent change of heart.
Jamie Clarke, Mark Foster, Lee Marshall, Dominic Revill, Scott Taylor and Martin Wormall have all followed outgoing manager Graham Drury to Stamford while almost all of the other first team squad members have departed for pastures new.
Harrison has brought former Bourne team mate James Baxter to Harrowby Fields, while a reverse of the trend in player movement has seen Daryl Chappell sign from Stamford. Other new faces are ex-Grantham reserve keeper Matt Whittle, Cottesmore defender Marcus Baines, Chris Briggs from Newcastle University, ex Wyberton man John Chand, Gavin Knox from the Harrowby Athletic Sunday side, Michael Parker from Horncastle, ex-Dudley man Rob Renshaw, Chris Self from Newark Flowserve and Ilkeston front man Cyle Myers. Returning to the club is Colin Howe from local side Buckminster while Aaron Conroy has stepped up from Grantham League football.
Fords tempt Sileby pair
Ford Sports have handed two of last season’s Sileby championship side the chance of Premier Division football after the Fernie Fields club opted to continue in Division One. Defender Grant Stewart and midfield man Tim Clack have both switched to Royal Oak Way where other newcomers are goalkeeper Shaun Markie from Tamworth’s second string and Cogenhoe left back Matt Poulton.
Among the departures from Royal Oak Way is captain Phil Murphy who has teamed up with brother Matt at Brackley.
Woodford add to squad
After a couple of seasons of steady progress Woodford could be dark horses for honours this time round after adding a handful of new faces to their squad.
Goalkeeper Matt Finlay has been signed from Oxford City while front runner Russ Dunkley is back in the fold after a spell with Brackley. Completing the new faces at Byfield Road are Matty Travers, a former Banbury player who missed the whole of last season through injury, and midfield man Kai Ridley from Aylesbury. Defender Arron Parkinson has also committed to the Reds after playing most of last season for Priors Marston.
Buckby go for strength in depth
Following their best season in years Long Buckby will be optimistic of another good campaign after adding to the squad’s strength in depth over the summer.
Defender/midfielder Dan Burke has arrived from champions Cogenhoe along with exciting prospect Steve Blackwood. Defender Mark Lyte has returned after spells with Daventry and Bicester while veteran goalkeeper Paul Warnecki has also arrived from Daventry. Former Bugbrooke midfielder Gareth Errington has also signed on at Station Road along with Louis Pilgrim from Bicester and Mohamed Ali from Northampton Spencer.
Goals from Dave Drinkwater and Steve Blackwood saw the Bucks close their pre season programme with a 2-0 success against Moulton in the Andy Humphries Memorial Cup match.
Stotfold ring the changes
Stotfold will enter the new campaign with one of the most changed squads in the Premier Division. New manager Jim Benton has rebuilt the Roker squad with several signings with higher grade experience.
Midfielder Jason Blackett and striker Carl Drew were both with Dunstable last season, while former Hitchin players joining the Eagles are goalkeeper Steve Graham, defender Nick Nolan, midfielders Wayne Mills and Jamie Magi and ex-Aston Villa junior Glenn Marshall who plays in midfield or defence.
Striker James Potter was with Luton Town at junior level while midfield man Jamie McDonald has linked up with Stotfold after a spell coaching in the USA. He was a professional at Derby County and won Scotland youth caps. Defenders Saim Hussain and Richard Petrisor and goalkeeper Robert Evans have followed Benton from Brache Sparta.
Arlesey midfielders Jermaine Daley and Jason Thomas and striker Richard Pringle have also joined the Eagles along with Wootton midfielder Leon Cashman, Harrow striker Steve Dogbe, and former Buckingham and Wootton defender Mark Yearwood.
Stotfold’s Roker ground has been identified as a possible site for a £4 million leisure centre by Bedfordshire County Council. In turn a site on Arlesey Road has been identified as a possible home for the club. Plans are at a very early stage and relocation for the Eagles could be five years or so away.
Four new faces for Desborough
Despite the appointment of a new look management team at the Waterworks Field, Desborough’s playing staff shows few changes from that which finished the 2004-05 campaign.
Stewarts & Lloyds midfielders Matty O’Neill and Greig McIlwain have joined Ar Tarn along with David Glass who has returned to action after missing most of last season through injury. Desborough have also added Woodford centre half Rick Kimbell to their squad.
Poachers bring in five
Boston Town will again be one of the more settled clubs as the new campaign draws close. Goalkeeper Simon Ward has rejoined the Poachers while defender Mark Thompson and midfielder Carl Basker have been recruited from Wisbech. Former Boston United starlet Leigh Taylor has also arrived at Tattershall Road, signing from Deeping, while completing the Poachers’ summer recruitment drive is ex-Skegness forward Jamie Sleight.
A site for Town’s new ground has been identified on the southern edge of Boston.
Relations with near neighbours Boston United continue to improve. The clubs recently jointly staged a Sportsman’s dinner with Jimmy Greaves as the main speaker. The clubs also met in a curtain raiser to the new season at Tattershall Road with the Pilgrims running out 4-0 winners. Jason Lee hit a first half hat trick for United with Austin McCann completing the scoring after the break.
Few changes for Deeping
Deeping are another club who show few changes to the squad which finished last season. They have brought in two new strikers, ex-schoolboy cap Mark Lovelace arriving from Boston Town and Hungarian Lovas Laszlo joining from local football in Boston. Laszlo was quick to make an impact with three goals in the pre-season Lincs Free Press Cup.
Also joining Rangers are young Bourne defender Ryan Birtles and utility man John Armstrong from Blackstones, while former Durham player Chris Emmerson is another Outgang Road arrival.
Dons visit a Buckingham success
Buckingham’s preparations for the new season were given a massive boost by the visit of their local Football League club the Milton Keynes Dons on 16th July. A crowd of over a thousand turned out at Ford Meadow while the club also staged a successful dinner to mark the occasion with Dons chairman Peter Winkleman the speaker.
On the field the Robins competed well until goalkeeper Willie Gourlay was red carded for handling outside the box just before the interval. Izale McLeod, Gareth Edds and Aaron Wilbraham shared the goals in the Dons’ 3-0 success.
Ex-Sunderland, Burnley and Northampton defender Lee Howey leads the parade of Robins’ signings after joining as player-coach. There will be plenty of competition for strike places at Ford Meadow in the months ahead. Meshach Cole has returned from Crawley Green, while Andy Prescott from Brackley and ex-Aylesbury man Ryan Wiffen from Winslow are other new front runners.
Goalkeeper Willie Gourlay has joined from Stewarts & Lloyds, midfielder Jonathan Barnett has signed from Dunstable while Phil Turner is back to strengthen the defence after a year sidelined with injury.
Kuhne reshapes Saints
New player-manager Steve Kuhne has signed a host of new players at St Neots. Defender Gary Watts and midfielders Nathan Buckland and Matt Endersby have followed him from Potton, while goalkeeper Ben Webster and midfielder Ricky Dear have both checked in from Soham.
Two players who started last season at Rowley Park have returned, midfielder Jon Hoggett from Arlesey and front man Mark Phillips from Biggleswade Town, while other new faces are defender Andy Hart, returning from Mildenhall, and Mark Franklin who helped Caldecote to the Bedford League title last term. Another familiar face checking in at Rowley Park is striker Gary Walker from Stotfold.
Former Kempston, Wootton and Cogenhoe goalkeeper Steve Fox, a former Kempston manager, has been named as Kuhne’s assistant.
Stones recruit six
Blackstones have had a relatively quiet close season but have made some significant signings over the summer.
Goalkeeper Ian Flavell has returned to Lincoln Road after spending last season with Harrowby, who have also lost defender Darren Glover to Stones. Blackstones should be stronger in midfield after snapping up ex-Rothwell Town skipper Dean Foley. RAF man Ian Matthews should also strengthen the engine room while striker Dan Jolly is trying his luck at the higher level after several prolific seasons with Peterborough League club Uppingham Town. Strike prospect Ashley Stevens has switched from Deeping to complete the new faces at Lincoln Road.
Defender Gavin Barnes, who missed most of last season through injury, faces another lengthy lay off after suffering a broken arm in the friendly with Holwell Sports. Pre season action has seen the club hit by injuries to several left sided defenders with Lee Booker and Scott Marshall also expected to miss the big kick off.
The club’s record appearance holder Trevor Smith has joined the Stones backroom staff.
Spencer assemble big squad
A lively close season at Northampton Spencer has seen new manager Steve Jelley among the busiest of bosses, as a host of new signings have checked in at Kingsthorpe Mill.
A trio of ex-Millers defenders have returned to the fold from Ford Sports, brothers Jamie and Jerry Moss and Ross Harris, while another player returning is the manager’s son, also Steve, who played for Oxford City in the Southern League last season.
Former Stoke City youngster Adam Baptist could be a key man for Spencer while other new faces are Bugbrooke defender Tom O’Brien, Blisworth pair Pete Gregory and Matt Collins, top scorer for the Railwaymen last term, Matt Broomes from ON Chenecks and ex-Daventry man Scott Marshall who missed most of last season through injury.
Blue Cross sign eight
Wootton have been surprisingly active in the transfer market over the summer after ending last term with a settled squad.
Defender Neil Bedeau and midfielder Steve Hall have arrived from Bedford United, while a raid on neighbours AFC Kempston has seen Wootton recruit the Walnut Boys’ player of the year Matt Jones and top marksman Matt Kent.
Also checking in at Weston Park are defender Marco Cerrone from Old Bradwell, Danny Kelly from Riseley and Michael Franklyn from Hitchin, while front runner Adam Smith has rejoined Blue Cross after following former manager Ken Davidson to St Neots last season.
Younger look for Swans
Newport Pagnell are preparing for the new season with a younger squad as new boss Terry Shrieves puts his mark on the Swans line up.
Experienced quartet Richard Caso, Gary Flinn, Ben Hill and Marc Redsull have all moved on to Stony Stratford.
New recruits from within the UCL are Daventry defender Tom Bland and front runner Michael McKenzie, a former Kettering and Bedford Town player who top scored for Raunds last term. Other new faces at Willen Road are Padbury goalkeeper Bobby White, Pete Rowe from Loughborough University, Andrew Kidd from Leighton, Aylesbury youth teamer Rob Hatcher, Bedford Town youngster David Barron and a trio of front men, Vinny Shrieves from Buckingham Athletic, Andy Bennett from Woodford and Zinzan Manuana who has been playing in Sweden for Ragsveds IF.
Highlight of Newport Pagnell’s warm up programme was a match against MK Dons which saw the Coca Cola League One side run out 6-0 winners. Malvin Kamara and Wade Small netted two goals apiece with Izale McLeod and Nicky McKoy also on the scoresheet for Danny Wilson’s men.
Silverware for Wakes
Bourne’s preparations for the big kick off received a confidence boost when they became the first winners of the Lincolnshire Free Press Cup, a trophy donated by the newspaper to be contested by the four senior clubs in its circulation area. It was a success which looked highly unlikely when the Wakes trailed by two goals to Deeping at half time in their semi-final, but Danny Moore and Chris Gray hauled Bourne on terms and they ran out 4-2 shootout winners. In the final Gray scored twice more as the Wakes drew 2-2 with Spalding. A marathon shootout saw Bourne win 10-9 with keeper Mick Hurst the double hero, scoring his own kick and saving from opposite number Ian Pledger to give the Wakes the cup.
Bourne were less successful in the Kevin Morris Memorial Cup match, losing 6-0 to Peterborough United who ran in five second half goals after the Wakes competed well in the first period. Northern Ireland cap Peter Kennedy and Rob Duffy scored two apiece for Posh who also had Adam Newton and Simon Rea on the mark.
New faces in the Wakes squad are schoolboy international Mark O’Dea who played for Spalding before going to Newcastle University, fellow midfielder Michael Stevenson from Holwell Sports, Yaxley front runner Scott Cunningham and former Wake Andy Smurthwaite who returns following spells with Blackstones and Cottesmore. Leigh Radford and Danny Moore step up from Grantham League football with Barrowby and Buckminster respectively.
Six new faces for Shopmates
After rebuilding his squad to good effect in the last couple of months of last season, Nick Ashby has brought in a sprinkling of new faces for the new campaign.
Former Corby Town defender Andy Brown will skipper the Shopmates, who have added Pete Sneddon from Stewarts & Lloyds and Steve Ainge from Higham to their midfield options.
Another ex-Steelman, striker Richard Tanner, has signed from Leicestershire Senior Leaguers Ellistown while Ashby’s former Stamford team mate Carl Tallents arrives from Barrow Town.
Best known recruit is player coach Les Hornby. He was an influential member of Rothwell’s back to back title winning team of the early nineties, and went on to play for Yeovil, Hinckley and VS Rugby where he had a brief spell as manager. After retiring through injury Hornby made a comeback last season with Desborough.
An encouraging pre season saw Raunds beat Southern League pair Corby Town and Rothwell Town and lose narrowly to Northampton Town and Nuneaton.
Stewarts & Lloyds call on Cottingham connection
The closure of near neighbours Corby Cottingham has benefited Stewarts & Lloyds as a host of players have moved across town to Occupation Road.
Goalkeeper Lee Brydon, defenders Dave Donativo and Daniel Rogers, midfielders Paul Doherty and Duncan McNish and strikers Dave Trimble and Bobby Drain have all signed from the defunct club, following ex-Cottingham boss Graham Leech who has joined Rob Clark’s backroom staff as co-assistant.
Also joining S&L is Corby Town strike prospect Chris Caswell.
Former player Dave Beazeley has also returned to Occupation Road over the summer to help Paul Ross run the second string.
St Ives prepare for Premier bow
St Ives manager Warren Everdell is giving the members of his promotion winning squad the chance to prove themselves in the top flight, but has added a sprinkling of new faces to provide competition for places. Brothers Aaron and Jason Bannie have checked in at Westwood Road. Goalkeeper Aaron has switched from Peterborough Northern Star while left back Jason numbers Deeping and Ely among his previous clubs. Experienced midfielder Craig Donaldson from Ely has also seen service with Rushden & Diamonds and Stamford. Defender Steve Poore joins the Saints from the all conquering Needingworth outfit in the Cambs League.
Transfer trail
With the season yet to start a couple of players have already changed their plans for the new season:-
1. Aaron Bannie Peterborough Northern Star to St Ives Town
2. Wes Byrne Stotfold to Potton United
