Potton 2 2 Cogenhoe |
Cogenhoe held out against frantic second half pressure from Potton to claim the point which secured them a first ever Premier Division championship. Both sides struggled for fluency in the first half with dead ball situations providing the main excitement. The Cooks took the lead after 18 minutes when Jamie Wright's corner from the right was allowed to reach the back of the box where Nicky Hodges rose highest to head home. Potton levelled after 24 minutes when a long free kick from Mark Bryant was headed in by Luke Donnelly. Brett Donnelly then had a 20 yard short saved by Pete Earl before Brad Gillham bravely smothered at Simon Underwood's feet at the other end. Cogenhoe went back in front three minutes before the break when the Royals defence failed to deal with Brian Page's ball into the box and Elliott Sandy found space to find the home net. Needing two goals to win the championship Potton stormed into the attack after the interval. Earl clawed a goalbound header from Steve Kuhne round the post and then Kuhne rattled the foot of the post after a good run and pull back from Glen Crook. Wright was narrowly over with a well struck free kick as Cogenhoe lifted the siege but Brett Donnelly missed a gilt edged chance to level, shooting straight at Earl after brother Luke sent him clear. Potton equalised after 73 minutes when Brett Donnelly scored his 51st goal in all competitions this season after Gary Jackson played him through. Cogenhoe's task of defending their point was made harder eleven minutes from time when Underwood was sent off after kicking the ball away to earn a second caution. Potton substitute James Hatch had the ball in the net but the point was ruled out for a foul on Earl, but belief began to drift away from the Royals in the 86th minute. Hatch outpaced the Cogenhoe defence only for Earl to save superbly, the ball fell to Brett Donnelly who looked a certain scorer until Wright flung himself in the way of the shot to block on the line. In stoppage time Brett Donnelly clipped the top of the visiting crossbar, but for once it wasn't his night as Cogenhoe held on for the title winning point. Potton: Brad Gillham, Eddie Endersby, Mark Bryant (James Hatch 46), Gary Watts, Luke Donnelly, Glen Crook, Gary Jackson, Stuart Lochhead (Nathan Buckland 69), Brett Donnelly, Steve Kuhne, Matt Endersby. Cogenhoe: Pete Earl, Brian Page, Jamie Wright, Russ Douglas, Nick Hodges, Richard Bunting, Rob Goldring (Roy Anderson 65), Carl Holmes, Darren Collins (Donovan Reed 85), Simon Underwood, Elliott Sandy. Cogenhoe need a draw from their final match at Potton to claim their first ever UCL title. Adam Sandy's title chasers were too strong for bottom markers Daventry who will finish at the foot of the tables unless S&L lose their final game by a seven goal margin. Simon Underwood gave Cogenhoe a 10th minute lead, springing the home offside trap before firing home from the edge of the box. The lead was doubled on the stroke of half time when Jamie Wright's cross from the left was turned back across goal by Underwood for Darren Collins to head home. Collins was on target again after 59 minutes after Brian Page and Dan Burke combined on the right, but Town cut the deficit two minutes later through Dave Stone who latched onto a header back by Cooks defender Russ Douglas. Underwood completed the scoring in the final minute after turning his marker and racing clear from the halfway line. |

Brian Page gave the Cooks the lead nine minutes before the interval, heading home after Boston goalkeeper Scott Loach saved from Roy Anderson. Top played 3rd from bottom, on paper it looked like it should have been a cricket score for the home side. But Daventry had other plans they defended solidly and played some good passing football, The away keeper also made 2 fine saves to keep them well in touch with the game. The "Cooks" were frustrated for large periods in the game but even though Daventry played some good Football they never really looked like scoring and were restricted to half a dozen long range efforts that went well wide. The only goal in the game came from Elliot Sandy on the stroke of half time, the ball was passed in to his feet on the edge of the 6 yrd box he turned well and fired low into the bottom corner to give the home side all 3 points. |

COOKS boss Adam Sandy is refusing to admit the premier division is in the bag despite his side moving 10 points clear after this comfortable win. With Holbeach losing and Yaxley drawing Cogenhoe took a big step towards their first UCL crown. They are now 10 points clear and 18 points ahead of Holbeach, who have five games in hand. But Sandy said: "We've won nothing yet. There are still seven games to go and all we have done is put ourselves in a great position. "It is my job to keep the lads' feet on the ground and taking each game as it comes. Until it is mathematically certain I won't be celebrating anything. But the lads played excellently on Saturday. Wootton had a lot of six footers and we must be the smallest side in the league. But we have concentrated on putting pace and energy in the side and seems to be working." Teenager Ollie Wilkinson gave the Cooks the lead after 18 minutes and seven minutes before the interval a magnificent 35-yard shot from Richard Bunting gave Cogenhoe a stranglehold on the contest. Richard Turner's 22nd goal of the season in the final minute of the match made the final scoreline an emphatic one. |

Cogenhoe remain firmly in the driving seat in the Premier Division title race after sharing the spoils at second placed Yaxley. The Cooks looked the sharper side in the first hour or so before the home side finished the match strongly to earn their point. Cogenhoe top scorer Richard Turner forced Jody Vincent in the home goal to save on the quarter hour while at the other end Lee Blewett's mazy run ended with his shot blocked, the midfielder blazing wide from the rebound. On the stroke of half time Turner took a return pass from Richard Bunting but failed to hit the target with his cross shot. At the start of the second half an inswinging corner by Lewis Richardson was tipped away by visiting keeper Pete Earl, but for the most part it was Cogenhoe running the show and Jamie Wright was narrowly off target from a free kick. The tabletoppers finally went ahead after 70 minutes when Roy Anderson was left unmarked to slot home from close range. The goal prompted the Cuckoos into life and Ricky Hailstone's 30 yard strike found Earl well positioned, and the keeper was soon brought into action to thwart Mark Paul. The former Southampton man's pace was the home side's main threat and Paul earned his side a 76th minute penalty as he was hauled back by Mark Njotsa after bursting into the box. Hailstone converted confidently from the spot. In the dying seconds Earl made a superb save to turn away Dale Watkins' free kick, and from the corner Watkins had another chance but headed over from six yards. Cogenhoe United 0 3 Yaxley Saturday, 9th October 2004 The top flight's last two unbeaten sides met at a windswept Compton Park and a very effective team performance brought the Cuckoos a richly deserved victory which keeps them top of the pile. Both sides tried to keep the ball on the deck to combat the conditions and the outcome was an entertaining contest. Jamie Wright volleyed narrowly wide from the edge of the box for Cogenhoe after ten minutes but Yaxley were soon in control of the game, home keeper Pete Earl brought into action to save from Ashley Stevens and a Ricky Hailstone free kick before Danny Bowyer headed over from another accurately placed Hailstone free kick. It was little surprise when Stevens gave the Cuckoos a 35th minute lead with a low shot from the edge of the box. An immediate Cogenhoe response saw Richard Turner get in on the blind side of the visiting defence, only to fire against the outside of the post. Yaxley again produced an assured display after the interval, allowing the home side few opportunities to get back into the match. The Cuckoos went further ahead after 63 minutes. Peter Miller crossed from the right, Stevens fired goalward only for Eatl to parry, Bowyer reacting quickest to slot home. Bowyer glanced a header inches wide from a Michael Goode centre but the points were wrapped up five minutes from time. Miller beat two defenders before striking the crossbar, the home defence failed to clear their lines and Stevens nipped in for an opportunist goal to seal an emphatic victory. Cogenhoe: Pete Earl, Dan Burke, Ollie Wilkinson, Simon McCarthy, Mark Njotsa, Louis Pilgrim (Steve Blackwood), Ben Foster (Scott Goodacre), Elliott Sandy, Darren Collins, Richard Turner (Donovan Reed), Jamie Wright. Yaxley: Jody Vincent, John Patten, Michael Goode, Ben Lawrence, Chris Lenton, Steve Burns, Peter Miller, Danny Bowyer, Ashley Stevens (Mark Kingston), Ricky Hailstone, Simon Acton. |
