Youngsters lead the way in Cooks fight back

A second half fight back from the Cooks saw us claim an impressive 1-1 home draw with Southern League Premier outfit Brackley Town last night.

The Cooks started the game playing 3-5-2 with pretty much a regular team line up bar Tom McGowan who was unavailable so Wes Emery filled the breach in midfield and had an excellent game.

The Cooks started with George McClellan in goal, three centre halves of Nick Ashby, Danny Frid who was again impressive and Lee Gotch, two wing backs of Danny Thomason and Jamie Russell, a midfield trio of Jed Ainge, Dan Burke and Wes Emery, while new signing Karl Bates partnered Alfie Taylor upfront.

The Cooks fell behind to an early Jamie Kearns strike and looked as if they were struggling against the pace and movement of our higher grade opposition. But the Cooks quickly settled and played some neat football and quickly got back into the game. Alfie Taylor spurned the Cooks best chance of the half when he fired over from inside the area.

After halftime Darren Collins switched his Cooks line up around reverting back to our usual 4-4-2 formation with Jamie Wright at Left back, midfield man Jed Ainge at right back and Lee Gotch and Danny Frid in the centre, a midfield quartet of Damon Herbert, Wes Emery, Carl Jays Jnr and youth team graduate Danny Mortimer, while upfront was the Under 18 strike force of Dustin Fitzgerald and Sean Nicholson who both proved again that they are on the doorstep of a first team call up after causing major headaches to the Brackley backline.

The Cooks dominated the second half with Damon Herbert on the right causing problems to the Brackley left back all half. But it was Daniel Mortimer on the left who undid the Brackley backline as has drilled cross from the left was turned into his own net by one of the Saints centre backs. Lewis Leslie replaced Wes Emery for his first team debut and did extremely well against a well drilled Saints midfield.

Darren was extremely pleased with how the game went and was equally impressed with the players who are making strides in the reserves and looking for a first team call ups.

Cooks Arrange Midweek Friendly

Cogenhoe United FC are set to host Southern League Premier Division outfit Brackley Town tomorrow night (9th February) here at Compton Park in a 7.45pm Kick Off.

With the poor run of weather Darren Collins was eager to get a game in midweek to help his Cooks side prepare and sharpen up for the weekends clash with Newport Pagnell.

Last week a similar game was arranged with UCL Division One side Rushden & Higham and Darren was pleased with the outcome as his Cooks side ran out 2-1 away winners thanks to goals from Alfie Taylor and Ben Baines.

Please pass on the news of this fixture!

Sadly Bugbrooke were unable to get the numbers together to field a side, that game will now be resheduled for later in the season.
